Pianos in churches require more regular care than pianos in private homes. And that means that church piano tuning and repair services need to be performed more frequently.

Why would that be? There are several reasons.

The piano needs to stay in tune, especially when multiple instruments play together. If the piano is out of tune, it’s impossible to make the music sound right.

Of course you know that a piano needs to be in tune, so why is it a bigger deal when it comes to pianos in churches?

Church Piano Tuning Needs And Temperature

The biggest challenges are caused by the fact that the temperature and

often the humidity in a church can fluctuate a great deal. During the regular Sunday services, the room temperature is generally kept at a very comfortable level. However, during the rest of the time, usually due to cost savings measures, the temperature is closer to whatever it happens to be outside.

This means that in summer, the temperature fluctuates from comfortable to quite hot and humid, and in winter, it is the reverse. Unfortunately, this presents a big challenge for pianos in churches and causes them to go out of tune much more quickly than they would in a private home, where their environment would be kept consistently at room temperatures.

Other Piano Challenges

There’s more wear and tear on pianos in churches. Often they get moved around from one side to the other, to accommodate the presence or absence of a choir and other special features of the Sunday service. Moving pianos can easily destabilize them if it’s not done by a piano moving expert. And even then it’s not ideal and should be followed by a close check of its pitch.

Another challenge may be due to the fact that multiple people may be playing the piano, which can make it more challenging to keep track of the piano’s proper pitch. If the same person plays the piano regularly, he or she would be more aware of subtle shifts in performance.

School Piano Tuning

I also count many schools among my clients, and they face similar challenges. Temperature fluctuations are a major challenge for pianos in schools as well, since the facilities are kept heated or cooled during regular school hours. At night and on weekends, however, they will be hot during the summer, and cold during the winter. These temperature fluctuations also make it necessary to tune school pianos regularly.

In addition, school pianos get a lot of use, so they need frequent tunings and other attention to ensure that they’re always in tune.

I’m often asked about the cost of tuning a piano as well as piano moving cost. The exact cost depends on the piano and the shape it is in. And, of course, the cost of moving the piano also depends on distance and other factors involved in the move, such as stairs, the size/weight of the piano, and more.

However, I can assure you that I am very competitive when it comes to piano tuning cost as well as piano moving cost. I love working with churches (and schools) and I’m especially willing to give them a great deal if more than one piano is involved.
